The Hermetic Library audio pool is a participatory place for sharing sounds and music of a living Western Esoteric Tradition. Music and performance can be a form of ritual and magick. Works and artists have long been inspired by the ideas of Western Esotericism and Mysticism. This group is to help create a space for sharing, music and other audio, and connecting with artists who feel drawn to these topics and ideas, or, especially, incorporate and manifest ritual and magick in their works.

“He struggles to name any influences on their formative sound, offers scant details about his upbringing as a Jehovah’s Witness (‘you didn’t have Christmas and you didn’t have birthdays … it was interesting’) and declines to elaborate on the interest in the occult that has led him to make regular references to chaos magic in his songs and to perform gigs he calls Ceromonies (sic) on the anniversaries of Austin Osman Spare and Aleister Crowley’s deaths. ‘It’s nothing to do with believing, like I believe you,’ he frowns, when I ask him if he actually believes in magic or is merely using it as interesting imagery. ‘It’s knowing. I know. I’ve experienced things that are beyond reality. Many things.’ This sounds fascinating, but McCoy collects himself. ‘I don’t want to go too far on this,’ he says hurriedly, ‘because I don’t want to make a twat of meself.’” [via]

I posted about Dr Dee: An English Opera last year at “Dr Dee: An English Opera on July 1st-9th at Palace Theatre, Manchester UK” but missed that the music had been released. Anyhow, Aleister Crowley and the Golden Dawn both get hat tips.

“Any casual fans wondering what that Gorillaz singer Damon Albarn has been up to since the graphic outfit split last year will probably not find this album the most germane of listens. When you stick the Dr Dee CD into your computer, iTunes laughably categorises it as indie rock. It really isn’t.

First staged at Manchester’s international festival last year, Dr Dee is an operatic work that revisits John Dee, a renaissance man of the Elizabethan era. His expertise in mathematics and astronomy earned him the ear of Elizabeth I, but his thirst for occult knowledge led to his downfall. A more evolved version of the opera is due this summer, as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

This is also Albarn’s first solo album proper (not counting the demo collection, Democrazy, from 2003), and Dr Dee finds the occasional Blur singer at his most heterogeneous: refracting folk and early church music through the African influences he has been steeped in since 2002′s Mali Music. The album opens with running water, Devonian birdsong and an organ-heavy track called ‘The Golden Dawn’, a reference to the magickal society probably best known to rock fans as the playground of Aleister Crowley.” [via]

I added five new items by Aleister Crowley from the pages of Vanity Fair in 1916. There’s a couple of articles, some written pseudonymously, and some more poetry I think hasn’t been collected anywhere before. One of the articles is a historical political piece which will probably be of interest to a variety of people; another is a kind of review of Ratan Devi’s performances in New York by Crowley, which is Crowley promoting the work of a love interest under a pseudonym; the final article is an odd little spoof piece purporting to detail the scientific management of blondes (which also includes an interesting fake comment from the Editor chidding the piece for appearing to favour the Germans). Then there’s two poems, one begins “A cigar is like a wife!” and the second “When first your raven beauty made me fond” seems to be related to the article about blondes.

You can read a bit more about Aleister Crowley, his affair with Ratan Devi, and this period of time when Crowley was in New York in Chapter 12 of Richard Kaczynski‘s Perdurabo: The Life of Aleister Crowley and also, I happened onto this today, for another perspective in “The savant and the occultist” by Richard Boyle. Of course, don’t forget that the Confessions of Aleister Crowley are online at the library.

The first additions to a new section for forewords and other front matter by Hermetic Library fellow Joscelyn Godwin have just been added on his pages. We are working together to get many from Joscelyn’s extensive corpus of front materials online. I’m sure you will agree this ongoing project is an exciting development that will offer many interesting and important additions to the library. For now, an initial two are available and, to the best of my knowledge, both of these are now available online for the first time, as will most, if not all, of the future additions. For my part, I’m quite excited to be able to help make this happen and moreover to share these with you all.

The first addition is the préface de Joscelyn Godwin to D.P. Paris: Albin Michel, 1988.

The second addition is the foreword by Joscelyn Godwin to K. Paul Johnson. The Masters Revealed: Madame Blavatsky and the Myth of the Great White Lodge. Albany: State University of New York Press, 1994.

“It was in this trance that Autumn saw the book — not as it appeared, but as it was; something from outside the realm of possibility, beyond man’s capability for invention. He grasped it, wondering at its weight, a heaviness unbound to its physical dimensions; a solidity hewn from the opposite of time, a stellar density expanding infinitely to loop back on itself, contracting, the ultimate return not implied but explicitly tangible in his hands. He felt his mind, his consciousness, distend and warp, and saw the totality of his existence as a shape, a convolution of circumstances and coincidence that when viewed from outside described a whole in which every point, every curve, every angle affected and described and necessitated every other facet; and Autumn beheld that this structure of infinite complexity and subtle design comprised no more than a single letter in the book, and realizing this he saw more: solitary characters, at first, but soon words, paragraphs, pages; and then he understood.”

Liber Astarte vel Berylli sub figura CLXXV as it appears in Equinox Vol I No vii has recently been added to the catalog at Goodreads, a “site for readers and book recommendations”. (ASTARTE vel Liber BERYLLI sub figurâ CLXXV is also available separately from the Equinox with the other Technical Libri along with so many other diverse works by Aleister Crowley at the library.)

The reason I mention this is several-fold. Primarily, it’s just kinda cool that the record was added, right? Also, having one of the Technical Libri cataloged is a very interesting development because this appears to be the very first item from the Hermetic Library added to the catalog at Goodreads. Further, because I was listed as an editor correcting and editing the text for presentation at the library, I have now ended up with an author profile at Goodreads. So, this now raises some interesting possibilities.

Let me be clear: I am not one to spend a lot of time asking people to promote the library by mostly meaningless shout-outs for more likes and clicks and followers who don’t actually use the site. Such activities that campaign for numbers are attention seeking distractions from the great materials on the site. Instead of seeking attention for having sought attention, I try to get attention that is focused on the actual materials being offered by the site. I do both very much welcome and rely on the organic development of support and word of mouth from people like you who actually use the site, people like you who find the materials useful, people like you who decide for yourselves that you want to tell other people about the Hermetic Library. I always value most the feedback of real people who actually use the site, and am constantly glad to be of service collecting, curating and creating materials for the site, but in doing that I just won’t get into some transparently shallow, and desperate for attention, game of numbers for the sake of numbers themselves. But, here is something very real: having a record for materials at the library appear in the catalog at Goodreads is a new opportunity for the Hermetic Library and for you, as someone who really uses the site, to help others find the fantastic and broad selection of materials available.

Perhaps you would consider, as you are gandering at something on the site you find valuable, adding an entry for that material as it appears at the Hermetic Library into the catalog at Goodreads? You can use the example provided by the entry for Liber Astarte vel Berylli to help know what to add. Do be sure you check if the work is already in the catalog, but you can add records by heading to the Add a New Book page.

For my part, I’m also considering ways that the new author profile I’ve ended up with might be used to help promote the materials at the library. If I can determine a good way, which for me means something that I feel is sensible, ethical and aesthetic, to use the author profile at Goodreads to promote the library then I’ll definitely do that. As I mentioned in a post previously, I try to engage on behalf of the Hermetic Library on social networks in ways that make sense to me and for me as long as they fit with the overall mission of the library and fit within my workflow. But, thanks to having an author profile at Goodreads, and thanks to the person who added the record for the material, a few new tools are open for my use that I otherwise wouldn’t have available.

After all, the mission of Goodreads “is to help people find and share books they love. Along the way, we plan to improve the process of reading and learning throughout the world” [via]. So, why not help share the materials at the library so other people around the world can find them even easier than before?

By the by, while looking at the pages for this liber, as it appeared on the site, I also ended up making several corrections and updates. So, you may want to also take a gander at it if you haven’t done so in a while. I don’t normally post about the many little updates and corrections I end up making, but since these changes are related to this post I’m mentioning them now. However, I do want to point out that while I constantly do my own work at finding mistakes and correcting them on the site, I do appreciate it when someone is kind enough to send me an email pointing out something specific that is in need of my attention. So, in conclusion, I’ll just mention that if you ever do find something amiss on the site, feel free to contact me.
