Omnium Gatherum: 4nov2020

An irregular hodgepodge of links gathered together … Omnium Gatherum for November 4, 2020

It’s the first Omnium Gatherum of the month, so I’ve again made this available, not just to Omnologists and above, but to all ongoing Patrons! Please enjoy this grab-bag of interesting things in partial thanks for your ongoing support of Hermetic Library and the work I do. Thank you!

Lots going on in the world, in general and in specific. Consider self-care. If you need it, there is 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline +1-800-273-8255. Feeling stressed out? Head to Crisis Text Line or text HOME to 741741 to connect with a Crisis Counselor. Need help with LGBTQ+ issues? Head to The Trevor Project, text START to 678678 or call the +1-866-488-7386. Want help figuring out what to do? Go to MindWise Innovations’ Mental Health Screening for a brief, anonymous, and confidential questionnaire for recommendations and key resources.

I’ve been doing more to link to shops other than Amazon. I’ve talked about this before, and I’ve been doing this more or less for a while now already. You can see plenty of examples on the blog and below, of course. However, here’s a recent article about Bookshop expanding to include indie bookshops in the UK: “‘This is revolutionary’: new online bookshop unites indies to rival Amazon. Bookshop.org, which launched in the US earlier this year, has accelerated UK plans and goes online this week in partnership with more than 130 shops.”

I’ve been thinking more about how I might still develop an active mailing list. Haven’t done anything about it, but I realized I’ve got two topics for lists, probably separate: anthology activity and a general attempt to reach people outside of social media algorithms. I’m definitely going to be in the thinking about it phase for a while. As an aside, and reminder, you can check out the old list I experimented with, but only posted a couple newsletters before realizing that the way I was doing things wasn’t sustainable. Also, I’ve tried a lot of different ways to try to get people to connect more directly, like the old BBS and Discord, but so far Patreon has been the only one with much traction or that’s sustained. Anyhow, so, I’ve got some experience to include in trying to think about how I’d go about it now.

Just a reminder that Astronomical Samhain, ☉ at 15° ♏ (Sun at 15° Scorpio) occurs in the Northern Hemisphere at 22:56 UTC on November 7, 2020. So, feel free to keep the month of Halloween going for a few more days!

And, I previously posted this only for Patrons with various Exchange perks, but still have these treats unclaimed. So, I’m going to open these to all of you Patrons!

As a special treat for you all as ongoing Patrons, I have a number of things which I thought I’d offer first-come-first-served. If you want one of these, comment on this over at Patreon; or send an email, private message, or soever with your request. I’m making this open to all of you. I’ll contact you privately for your preferred mailing address if you’re first-served.

Um. Yeah. These are all black fabric. Huh. Go figure. Each have been lightly worn (er, or used, in the case of the bag) once or twice at most, but either way are washed and clean and have been in storage for ages. Some may have bonus library cat fur and dander, as all have been in a home with several cats, so if you’ve allergies, consider proper airlock protocols until they are washed (again.) But, they’re spiffy, and I thought they’d make a nice treat that some of you might want!

Here’s a variety of notable things I’ve recently found that you may also be interested in checking out:

This post was possible because of support from generous ongoing Patrons and Members of the newsletter. Both Patrons and Members get access to Omnium Gatherum immediately and directly via web and email. On the blog, this will be exclusive to Patrons for one year, after which I’ll make it publicly available to everyone so they can see what they’ve been missing.
