The Crown

The Crown
(Redfern)

Ferocious burning and cascading like the space where air and fire meet to become smoke.

They say when smoke becomes thick enough it can become a Djinn and manifest itself into physical reality through smoke alone.

Brian Redfern graduated from CalArts in 1998, having studied composition with Nyoman Wenten, Kobla Ladzepko and Wadada Leo Smith. In 2005 Brian switched from guitar to the ancient middle eastern instrument, the oud, studying with virtuoso Yuval Ron.

Previously Brian had been the guitarist for Los Hermanos de Jazz who had opened up for bands such as the Stone Temple Pilots and performed sessions for Death Row Records, back in the wild and crazy early 1990s. Back then he also created a project called “Aleister’s Bastards” inspired by the work 777 by Aleister Crowley. However at the time, he had no idea he lived right down the street from the famous occult author, Lon Milo DuQuette.

Brian’s music runs the gamut from purely acoustic solo oud to electronic music and live electric performance. Brian plays both acoustic and electric oud and uses the ancient system of “Maqam music” from the middle east to compose new material based on ancient patterns.

He is greatly inspired by recent John Zorn projects such as the Crowley String quartet, which explore occult concepts with instrumental music inspired by western classical and avant-garde.

Besides having earned an MFA from CalArts Brian is an initiated Freemason, 3○, 32○, Thelemite and self-initiated Sufi/Ishmaeli. He’s also a 3○ in the OTO and a probationer of the A∴A∴, so occult practice and meditation are massive influences on his music.

Brian previously participated under the performance name Shams93.

Alien and Innocent

Alien and Innocent
(Williams)

Since the late 1980’s CHORONZON has been making the marks of a thousand knives in a world that is not often seen by the mainstream media. Down a singular path CHORONZON wandered lands never previously seen to reach across to their associate chaotes in a multi-media fashion that only became possible since the turn of the century. Chaos is CHORONZON’s jumping off point, discord, the quantum waves, and the ripples therefrom are the patterns imposed on chaos as the work filters though ears and crania. The act of listening continues the act of creation in that sense. Choronzon is a process. choronzon is an Hypersigil, each new aspect added over the decades is another facet revealed.

The genre with which Choronzon identifies is Xeno, for it comes from and expresses the outside. Outside the realm of conscious thought, outside society, outside genre and even western musical convention. Not as big a noise as other extreme metal artists, but much harder to listen to than most. Like a story of horror withouts the tropes of adventure, a listen is never conforming to a pre-packaged experience. Even the recordings don’t stay static, and will change even from the same audio files as the wiring of those who listen long enough changes. Conceiving the art and projecting its energy out into the universe is the most rewarding part, and the artifacts and social presentation are ancillary to that.

Vlčí Duše

Vlčí Duše
(Bártová, Bímová, Kříž, Vrbová)

Wolf Soul. From the album Hagazussa.

Tyto a další nezvyklé nástroje dávají hudbě Raavy neobvyklý sound a zvláštní hloubku. Inspiraci čerpá z šamanismu, germánské a keltské tradice či ze soudobých čarodějnických obřadů a Vlčího kultu.

Neskládáme pohádkové texty plné koloušků a lesních tůněk. Zpíváme o skutečných rituálech a obřadech, které provádíme všichni společně i každý zvlášť. Všichni členové Raavy jsou aktivní v současném evropském čarodějnickém a novopohanském hnutí.

Raavu tvoří:
Kamila Ramune Bártová – flétny, dudy, šalmaje; autorka textů a hudby. Aktivní wiccanka, hermetička a členka Vlčího kultu.
Kateřina Fauho Bímová – niněra, trumšajt, perkuse; autorka textů a hudby. Vyznavačka germánské tradice, magie run a Seidu.
Antonín Zodiac Kříž – cistra; autor hudby. Pohan germánské a severské cesty.
Nikola Nikki Vrbová – bubny; autorka textů a hudby. Průzkumnice starého světa Keltů, bytostí z jiných světů a exopolitiky.

The Raava music group focuses on original music in the spirit of European pre-Christian tracks. The Czech pagan band Raava, playing contemporary music on historical instruments, released their debut album Hagazussa.

The Raava music group consists of four Czech musicians playing historical musical instruments. Shalmai, bagpipes, animal bones such as percussion and flutes, niner, cister, shaman drums, davul or trumpet. These and other unusual instruments give Raava’s music an unusual sound and special depth. He draws inspiration from shamanism, Germanic and Celtic traditions or from contemporary witch rites and the Wolf Cult.

We do not compose fairy-tale lyrics full of fawns and forest pools. We sing about real rituals and ceremonies, which we all perform together and separately. All members of Raava are active in the current European witchcraft and neo-pagan movement.

Raava consists of:
Kamila Ramune Bártová – flutes, bagpipes, snare drums; author of lyrics and music. Active Wiccan, hermetic and member of the Wolf Cult.
Kateřina Fauho Bímová – niner, trumpet, percussion; author of lyrics and music. A follower of the Germanic tradition, the magic of the runes and the Seid.
Antonín Zodiac Cross – cistra; author of music. Pagan Germanic and Nordic routes.
Nikola Nikki Vrbová – drums; author of lyrics and music. An explorer of the old world of the Celts, beings from other worlds and exopolitics.

Enochian Call

Enochian Call
(Kobrin)

On Friday 13th April 1584 in Cracow, Poland, scientist and mathematician John Dee, and alchemist Edward Kelly made contact with Angels.

Delivered in reverse order to Dr Dee and Sir Kelley by an entity named Nalvage, in an angelic language called Enochian, this is the first of the ‘Enochian Calls’, of which there are 30.

The calls are used to enter the various Aethyrs, which are higher realms of consciousness, through visionary trance states.

The Aethyrs are conceived of as forming a map of the entire universe in the form of concentric rings which expand outward from the innermost to the outermost Aethyr.

These calls are a series of incantations in the Enochian language that when recited are supposed to inspire visions and insights and prophecies into the hidden nature of reality and the cosmos.

This is our performance and recitation of the first Enochian call.

Translated to English:

I reign over you, saith the God of Justice,
in power exalted above the firmaments of wrath;
in Whose hands the sun is as a sword,
and the moon as a penetrating fire;
Who measures your garments in the midst of my vestures,
and trussed you together as the palms of my hands;
Whose seats I garnished with the fire of gathering;
Who beautified your garments with admiration;
to Whom I made a law to govern the Holy Ones;
Who delivered you a rod with the ark of knowledge.
Moreover, you lifted up your voices
and swore obedience and faith unto Him that lives,
and who triumphs;
Whose beginning is not, nor end cannot be;
Who shines as a flame in the midst of your palace,
and reigns amongst you
as the balance of righteousness and truth.
Move, therefore, and show yourselves;
open the mysteries of your creation;
be friendly unto me;
for I am the servant of the same your God,
true worshipper of the Highest…

Vocals: Lika Starinets
All Instruments: Jake Kobrin
Additional Music Production: Clint Dorman at Helicon Sound Labs in Tampaksiring, Bali

Jake Kobrin creates music with an atmosphere that is deep, mysterious, serpentine, and occult, hearing everything as if through the smoke stained windows of a Naga Temple, ashen Shaivites obscured by thick plumes of ritual incense, their aetheric eyes awake to see the dragons swirling through the smoke above them.

“I am inspired by the music that pumps fire through my veins and smoke through my ears. With this music pulsing through the soundsystem I close my eyes and cup my dark cloak over my face as every inch of my body is subsumed by plumes of dense incense smoke. The ritual has begun…”

With roots in underground experimental, progressive, goth, and metal music culture, and with a mind stained with the memories of all night raves at Burning Man, Kobrin is a bass music enthusiast and is influenced by the urban underground bass music culture of the UK, British Columbia, and California. Combining deep forms of dubstep, grime, trap music, drum and bass, and new and innovative genres of electronic music yet undefined, he creates atmospheric, dark, and dreamy journeys designed to awaken the inner fire within us all.

Caller At The Crossroads

Caller At The Crossroads
(Triefenbach/Day)

Song for Astaroth, and dedicated to S/he the same. For accompanied voice and regular recital.

Sun Duel is an open-ended esoteric musical project of the Universal Love Upload, creating inspirational sounds for use by its members as well as the general public.

Over-arching thematic concerns include an existential examination of Self in its processes, such as the nature of Time as biological function and social construct, “Otherness” in gender and sexuality, and the co-opting of public spaces as sites of trance and transgression. We emerge in works of instability and hybridity. Through storytelling and the performative application of ceremonial and archetypal signifiers, we confront and inhabit Mystery, Cruelty, Joy, and the Uncanny.

This structuring of duration on site is achieved through theatricality, prayer/ focused intention, and the internalization of collage processes so that the resulting sounds, images and actions come to function somewhat as marks on a map, and the primacy of individual works is subsumed into conceptual clusters to be read in whole or in part- a system in continual growth and collapse.
