The cover artwork for this 2014 issue was created by Terra Bosart and is an interpretation of Atu 0, the Fool, in Tarot. One way of counting years is to use a cycle of Tarot cards. The current year count is Anno V 0 which can be represented by, and thus can be seen as having correspondence to, a combination of both Atu V, the Hierophant, and Atu 0, the Fool.
“The Fool is an inspiring figure for myself, launching into the unknown, and diving head first into new experiences. As we head into Autumn, and the natural world begins it’s march into winter, I feel it’s important to keep that youthful vigor of the Fool fueling ambitions. It can be quite tempting to hunker down and hibernate through the winter as it approaches, but we still have the Fall to continue our sacred works.
The female Satyr has been a personal archetype for as long as I can recall. Her horns symbolic of the feminine wisdom, and of life giving energies. The hooves can firmly grip the earth, a very grounding sense of inherent qualities such as belonging, acceptance, and movement or travel. Sure footing, as we travel our lives path, into the experiences of what may yet be. A walking staff, as a symbol of artificial grounding, alongside the natural means of travel. A third option, when many may only feel they have two.
Then, leap out into the unsure territories, and let what you encounter change your very self. Surrender that grounding connection to the earth for a bit, and let whimsy soar. The seasons change, and we must change as well, leaving old patterns of behavior which no longer suit our needs and desires.” [via]
Terra is a digital illustrator, graphic designer, and a writer. Using symbols and metaphor, she attempts to craft worlds and stories to explore the potentiality of the unconscious mind, and its mythology, and give it life in the material world. Terra’s work is styled loosely upon the comic styles of her youth, and the portals to another world which graphic novels represent. Years of study upon the esoteric traditions of the west, and modern Chaos Mysticism, have developed her philosophy of life which can be gleaned in her work.
Terra has been a strict adherent of paper, pencil, pen, and ink for the majority of the time, branching out into purely digital works recently as an extension of her philosophy.

“Crowley had little concern with Reuss’s treasured image of spiritual descendants of an imaginary body of medieval male Templars sharing secrets of a yogic sexual magic (transmitted from late antiquity) manifesting in the twentieth century as a new Gnostic Catholic Church. For Reuss the Oriental Templars’ great secret was that Jesus Christ and his ‘Beloved Disciple’ had been practicing adepts; Jesus’s semen being held to manifest magical, sacramental power: ‘He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him’ (John 6:56). Reuss consolidated the doctrine that consecrated sexual fluids constituted effective agents of magical, spiritual transformation through contacts established in Paris with French Gnostic Catholic Church clergy Jean Bricaud, Gérard Encausse and other Martinists when Reuss issued Encausse and his associates (including René Guénon) with a patent to administer the Rites of Memphis and Misraïm in 1908; it is believed that in return Reuss received ‘authority’ as a legate or bishop of the Église Catholique Gnostique in Germany. Reuss’s belief that the OTO’s originators were Christian Gnostics did not sit altogether well with his rather general approval of The Book of the Law. Despite this potential disparity of outlook, all might have progressed quite nicely were it not for the inconvenient interruption of World War One.”
“After the war Reuss described the OTO as a body of New Gnostic Christians who rejected the anti-German, that is anti-brotherhood, betrayal of the Versailles Conference and looked for a transnational movement. Crowley did not attend Reuss’s international Freemasonry conference organized in Basle in 1920 for kindred fringe-Masonic representatives worldwide. Thinking about the invitation while in retirement in Cefalù, Sicily, the Beast wondered if he had it in him to combine such a collection of what he considered nonentities into a force.
But what really got Crowley’s goat was that while paying lip service to aspects of The Book of the Law, Reuss was obviously putting distance between himself and his supposed colleague. The reasons for this soon became apparent. Reuss was seeking financial support from AMORC-founder Harvey Spencer Lewis; Reuss offered Lewis an OTO diploma as an inducement to affiliation.”

“The devil continues to be as useful for the modern church as he has been in the past, when he bolstered the case for the burning of heretics. The concept now provides a dramatic way to underscore the dangers of a godless society. The organiser of last week’s course, Dr Giuseppe Ferrari, argues that a rise in the number of people abandoning religion and dabbling in the occult has increased Satan’s power. As head of the Gruppo di Ricerca e Informazione Socio-Religiosa, a Catholic organisation concerned with the threat posed by cults and sects, Ferrari says good exorcists are needed more than ever, since: ‘We live in a disenchanted society, a secularised world that thought it was being emancipated, but where religion is being thrown out, the window is being opened to superstition and irrationality.’
This seems like an extreme position, but it is in perfect alignment with Francis’s views, which go further than his brief mentions of the devil last week suggest. In his very first homily as pope, delivered in the Sistine Chapel on the day after his election, Francis bluntly quoted the French author and Catholic convert Léon Bloy: ‘Anyone who does not pray to the Lord prays to the devil.'”

Aleister Crowley: The Beast in Berlin: Art, Sex, and Magick in the Weimar Republic by Tobias Churton, a new hardcover volume from Inner Traditions, has arrived at the Reading Room courtesy of the publisher.

Hi everyone, my name’s Sasha Chaitow, and I’m an artist, writer, and scholar of the crossover of esoteric thought and cultural history. I’ve been painting since 1996, and I hold two MAs in Literature and in Western Esotericism. I have just completed my PhD in Myth and Literature, examining the life and work of the mysterious Joséphin Péladan, a French visionary author who wrote over a hundred books devoted to his cause of inspiring a cultural renaissance through esoterically inspired art.
Austin Gandy has a patronage campaign to support The Talismonger Art Project, creating “occult artifacts” which may be of interest.
“Talismonger is my attempt to increase the aggregate enchantment in the world by dispersing strange objects of occult and esoteric significance to consenting recipients. I love creating art inspired by the world of magical experience: witchcraft and sorcery, the manipulation of bones and twine, crystals, candles, twists of herbs, the pursuit of visions, blessings, and guiding spirits. Art and Alchemy: The Mystery of Transformation is an exhibit at Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf through Aug 10th, 2014 that may be of interest [British Library]. The exhibit includes four ‘Ripley Scrolls’ from the British Library, which four are also available as Digitised Manuscripts and which you can read about on the British Library blog, if you can’t make it to see them in person.

“For the first time in Germany, an exhibition spanning all epochs and genres will be introducing the exciting link between art and alchemy in past and present times. 250 works from antiquity to the present, encompassing Baroque art, Surrealism, through to contemporary art from collections and museums in the USA, Great Britain, France, Mexico and Israel reveal the fascination which alchemy exerted for many visual artists. Artists featured in the exhibition, such as Joseph Beuys, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Max Ernst, Hendrick Goltzius, Rebecca Horn, Anish Kapoor, Yves Klein, Sigmar Polke, Rembrandt van Rijn, Peter Paul Rubens and David Teniers the Younger invite visitors to explore the mystery of transformation.
Alchemy was invariably practised in secret, but was by no means a rare occurrence until well into the 18th century: Eminent personalities, including Paracelsus, Isaac Newton and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, were alchemists, too. It was not until the Age of the Enlightenment that alchemy was ousted and became intermingled with occultism, sorcery and superstition. In connection with 19th and early 20th-century psychoanalysis alchemy was brought to new life.
The exhibition was conceived by Museum Kunstpalast in cooperation with the research group ‘Art and Knowledge in Pre-Modern Europe’ at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, as well as a group of experts at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia, which also provided many pieces on loan. A Wunderkammer of curious and exotic treasures from flora and fauna is offered for visitors to explore. In an extensive accompanying programme the subject of art and alchemy will be expanded upon by means of lectures, talks and guided tours. For the exhibition, a studio for children was set up, where the theme of ‘The Alchemy of Colour’ is explored by taking a close look at colours, along with their archetypical elements and production.”
It is time to start thinking about artwork and design for the one and only Hermetic Library album in 2014 from the Anthology Project!
There is a little bit over a month left before the deadline for submissions, on August 15th, 2014, for this year’s album, Magick, Music and Ritual 10, so I want to mention that I am looking for an artist to work with me to create the cover and design.
After a sequence of covers by myself, the inagural guest artist, for Fall 2012, was Valerie Herron. For the full year in 2013, the covers were by Mustafa al-Laylah. You should check out all of these great designs, and the albums they represent, by the guest anthology cover artists!
Now it’s time to start thinking about the next cover. If you or someone you know would be great for this and interested in working with me on them, I’d love to hear ideas. The cover could also be part of a whole poster or a detail of some part of a larger image. Or, perhaps you have an idea I have not even thought of and want to propose that instead!
