Shah initiated the work of Blasting Rod in July 2006 e.v., keeping the project active as an improvised collective until it settled into a power trio performing pre-written compositions in 2013 e.v. Three years later Chihiro was consecrated as The Office of Babalon with Shah at the Feast of the Gods, and Blasting Rod’s first limited edition CD was released on their own Low&Slow.Disk label. In 2018 e.v. bassist Yoshihiro Yasui (Crocodile Bambie/Outrage) replaced Shunji Miyoshi who departed to join Japanese metal stalwarts, Crowley. A live CD titled Blasting Rod II was released in the summer of V iv. The group’s first LP, in collaboration with southern California label Glory or Death Records, was released late in Vv. Work is currently underway on a new album projected for release sometime during the year Vvii. Tracks for The Hermetic Library’s Magick, Music, and Ritual 16 have been specially mixed and mastered by Yukito Okazaki (Eternal Elysium) at Studio Zen, Nagoya, Japan from recordings made during sessions for the upcoming album and are heard for the first time on this anthology.

Our cover includes art by P Emerson Williams, which was developed alongside the tracks by Choronzon, for this current year in the Thelemic Calendar, An V:vii (2021 e.v.), which represents the docosade of Atu V, the Hierophant and the year of Atu VII, The Chariot. We also have a total of three alternative covers, included with the album download at Bandcamp, that features additional artwork by P Emerson Williams.

Please join the Hermetic Library in promoting these artists who have contributed their work to this benefit anthology album project. Please also spread the word about these anthology albums to people you think may be interested in the work of artists who combine magick, music and ritual.

The best way to add this anthology, as well as previous releases and future Hermetic Library albums, to your personal music collection is through the Patron campaign at Patreon. New Patrons receive a gratis download code for a previous anthology release of their choice in addition to all the other patronage rewards they may receive. Consider becoming a Patron today!

During these plague years, I’m delighted to be able to share this new anthology album. Curating and sharing these is a highlight of my year, and I’m glad to have this album as part of the ongoing anthology cycle that has now lasted for 10 years. Though there’s been changes, and variations, and a lacuna, these have been a constant welcome rhythm through the years for me. Hopefully for others as well, this can provide some joy and comfort that the cycles in our lives continue no matter how rough the road may be along the way.

The Hermetic Library at Hermetic.com has an overall vision of Archiving, Engaging and Encouraging the living Esoteric Tradition, Hermeticism, Aleister Crowley’s Thelema, and more through Open Access Occultism for 25 years. Yes, this is the 25th year, the silver anniversary, of the library!

I started the benefit anthology project to help promote newer works in the Esoteric Tradition to the audience of the Hermetic Library and beyond. The anthology project also further raises awareness about the corpus and culture of magick and ritual. The site itself was started in 1996 and has ever since consistently been an extremely popular resource for students and researchers interested in the Esoteric Tradition. I encourage you to check out Hermetic Library and everything in the collection there, if you aren’t already familiar with it, as that’s the reason this project exists and may also offer inspiration to you.

For 2021, in addition to Magick, Music and Ritual 16, due in December, I am releasing this Patron and Subscriber exclusive issue. I asked each participant in the regular anthology issue to also submit something for this this additional release. So with extra gratitude their way, those who were kind enough to submit additional material, here is this special new issue exclusive to Subscribers on Bandcamp and Patrons on Patreon. This, then, is a thank you gift just for those who offer their ongoing support for the library and my work as the librarian, from both myself and these artists.

One more thing: In a new twist, instead of being in no particular order, this is an actual intentional playlist. Furthermore, this playlist is intended to join with Magick, Music and Ritual 16 to form an even larger sequence. However just to make things strange, though this playlist releases prior to MMR16 in 2021, I recommend adding this album after this year’s canonical anthology in the overall order. But, you do you!

To both participants and supporters, I say happy and hearty Thanksgiving day, and, moreover, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hermetic Library Anthology Artist Blasting Rod

Blasting Rod has been active in various guises since July 2006 e.v. The current lineup began performing together in 2013 e.v. when Shah and Chihiro (ex desert rock girls band, Stone Edge) met hermit-like bassist and musical instrument dealer/repairman from the back woods of Toyota City, Shunji Miyoshi (Crowley/ Mee’kawa Heavy Metal Jamboree) at a “Session Day” event where the three were matched up over a period of several months to perform one-off unrehearsed renditions of J.A. Seazer, Flower Traveling Band, Black Sabbath, Primus, The Doors, and so on. After beginning to work together as an improvisational trio later that year, they began to mix Shah’s original compositions with improvisation and assumed the mantle of Blasting Rod in 2014 e.v. In 2016 e.v. Chihiro was consecrated as The Office of Babalon with Shah at the Feast of the Gods, and Blasting Rod’s first limited edition CD was released on their own Low&Slow.Disk label. The trio has since been performing regularly in central Japan, Osaka, and Tokyo.
