Harmonies of Heaven and Earth

Harmonies of Heaven and Earth: Mysticism in Music from Antiquity to the Avant-Garde by Hermetic Library fellow Joscelyn Godwin, the 1995 reissue paperback from Inner Traditions, is part of the collection at the Reading Room.

Joscelyn Godwin Harmonies of Heaven and Earth from Inner Traditions

“What lies beneath the surface of music and what gives it its transcendent power? For many people, music is the primary catalyst for experiences of expanded consciousness. Musicians and lovers of music—all those who have ever reflected on its inner reality—feel that a true philosophy of music cannot deal with physics and psychology alone. It must include the universal and mystical aspect of which Plato, Kelper, Rameau, and Novalis wrote, and of which Wagner said: ‘I feel that I am one with this vibrating Force, that it is omniscient, and that I can draw upon it to an extent that is limited only by my own capacity.’ The spiritual power of music surfaces in folklore, myth, and mystical experience, embracing heaven and earth, heard as well as unheard harmonies.

Joscelyn Godwin explores music’s perceived effects on matter, living things, and human behavior. He then turns to metaphysical accounts of the higher worlds that are the birthplace of Harmony, following the path of musical inspiration on its descent to Earth, and illuminating the archetypal currents that lie beneath Western musical history. A final section gives the fullest account ever published of theories of celestial harmony, from Pythagoras to Rudolf Steiner and Marius Schneider.” — back cover

The Hermetic Library Reading Room is an imaginary and speculative future reification of the library in the physical world, a place to experience a cabinet of curiosities offering a confabulation of curation, context and community that engages, archives and encourages a living Western Esoteric Tradition. Hermetic Hosting’s new party dress and dance card

There’s been a couple updates over at Hermetic Hosting recently. Last night I pushed a big update to the site, so there’s now information about my plans within plans, um … well, information about hosting plans, anyway. I also have been working on an update to the logo.

The new Hermetic Hosting logo

For the idea behind this I’ve long been inspired by the image of Fludd’s Temple of Music, which is the origin of the details within the textured H in this image, and have been slowly approaching a logo for Hermetic Hosting which includes more of that inspiration. This is the next iteration of the image in an ongoing quest to approximate my imagination. There’s beautiful structure to both music and the virtual world of information, and I cannot help but imagine that the infosphere has it’s own celestial harmony. Hopefully, people will be interested in joining the symphony I am trying to create by building a community of esoteric sites.

Well, the big band music of the Infosphere Orchestra is beginning to swell in the background, and Hermetic Hosting has a new party dress on. Are you ready to be on Hermetic Hosting’s dance card? Don’t be a wallflower!

The first couple of founding early adopters have joined, and already have their temporary sites up and running. You can read more about details on the Hermetic Hosting site or in the posts about Hermetic Hosting on this blog, but as a reminder:

I am in the process of re-introducting Hermetic Hosting as a web hosting service to the esoteric community. In this early “Phase Zero” I am looking for early adopters committed to both supporting the library and also to hosting their sites on the same infrastructure used by the Hermetic Library. And, so, Phase Zero of Operation Resurrection: I am looking for at least 10-20 people who will commit to holding an account with a hosting service that is in service to the esoteric community before I set up the new server.

Take a gander at the updated Hermetic Library site and consider if I can be of service to you in hosting your site or your project!

You can also read previous Hermetic Hosting posts on this blog about the re-introduction of Hermetic Hosting, hosting plans and services, some super, but limited time, discounts offered, why you should consider Hermetic Hosting for your site hosting needs; and, the elevator pitch and tl;dr summary.

Whether you want to be part of the initial 10-20 founding early adopters who will commit to being part of Phase Zero, or you wait until the service is completely up and running and join during Phase One; you should consider Hermetic Hosting as a partner in your project. I’d sure like to be of service, and hope you’ll be part of the project.

There will be more to say over time, but I wanted to mention some of the recent updates. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments or concerns; or, you know, if you want to join in Project Resurrection!
