Fratres pour console no-input et violon alto

A while ago, I posted about Christian Carrière’s Fratres, and Christian sent me an email recently to point out some newer revisions to the work, which you may be interested in checking out.

“Last summer, I did a month-long residency at a great place called OBORO in Montreal. My goal was to develop a way of playing Arvo Pärt’s ‘Fratres’, originally for a string quartet, using only tuned audio feedback (from a large audio console). No external sound source is used. The technique is appropriately called no-input.
I discovered during the residency that I couldn’t play all the parts of the quartet. I got some help from violist Jean René who, aside from helping me understand the subtleties of the score, played the viola in this performance. At the last minute, we decided to add the kick drum, which I was very happy about. Jean graciously agreed to also play the drum.

Christian also points out another video: “I also made a shorter video with music and images from the residency that led up to the performance.”
