Personal and organizational site and domain hosting with Hermetic Hosting and Hermetic Library

You may know that one of the services I’ve tried to offer is site hosting and domain registrar services via Hermetic Hosting, as a way for Hermetic Library and myself to be of service to the community.

For various reasons I’ve recently been contemplating what would happen to the services I offer, including site hosting, if something happened to me. The fates of everything Hermetic Library related and also of my rescue cats have both been weighing very heavily on my mind lately.

These topics have been weighing heavily on my mind, especially as I have not managed over the last decade to much improve my personal situation or developed a sustainable foundation. I’m not harbouring much hope for the near future, and don’t see much hope for anything beyond that either. Recently, things for me have seemed to me to be particularly unlikely to continue much longer.

Realistically, for example, if I dropped dead or, easily the case, I become truly homeless and then die, no one would notice I was gone for maybe weeks, maybe even months, maybe not until services and sites related to Hermetic Library started to disappear from the net, as I wouldn’t be around to pay them or maintain them. Some of these might linger for quite a while, as there are some automatic deposits and payments, but at the most there would be very little anyone could do for them while waiting for them to eventually fail also.

But, ultimately, something could happen, and if something did, I’m not sure how long anything would continue to function. I could die tomorrow, for example, and services could start to fail at any point after that. There simply is no one else that is involved, let alone that has access to passwords or servers, in keeping them going now that would be able to keep them going after something happened.

With that in mind, I have contacted all the hosting clients who have sites to which I provide services recommending they consider how they would recover your sites, to consider their plan for disaster recovery; and to suggest that they should consider migrating to a hosting service without a single point of failure, such as exists for the services that I offer.

I just don’t see how I can continue with integrity offer hosting services to existing or new clients. Like many things, I had high hopes for how Hermetic Hosting could provide income to keep the library going and also be an awesome way that I could be of service to the community. Unfortunately, I think it would be irresponsible for me to continue to offer those services.

So, with heavy and hurting heart, in addition to contacting all existing hosting clients to ask them to consider their options, I’m also no longer accepting new hosting agreements or domain registrations as Hermetic Hosting.

Hermetic Hosting’s new party dress and dance card

There’s been a couple updates over at Hermetic Hosting recently. Last night I pushed a big update to the site, so there’s now information about my plans within plans, um … well, information about hosting plans, anyway. I also have been working on an update to the logo.

The new Hermetic Hosting logo

For the idea behind this I’ve long been inspired by the image of Fludd’s Temple of Music, which is the origin of the details within the textured H in this image, and have been slowly approaching a logo for Hermetic Hosting which includes more of that inspiration. This is the next iteration of the image in an ongoing quest to approximate my imagination. There’s beautiful structure to both music and the virtual world of information, and I cannot help but imagine that the infosphere has it’s own celestial harmony. Hopefully, people will be interested in joining the symphony I am trying to create by building a community of esoteric sites.

Well, the big band music of the Infosphere Orchestra is beginning to swell in the background, and Hermetic Hosting has a new party dress on. Are you ready to be on Hermetic Hosting’s dance card? Don’t be a wallflower!

The first couple of founding early adopters have joined, and already have their temporary sites up and running. You can read more about details on the Hermetic Hosting site or in the posts about Hermetic Hosting on this blog, but as a reminder:

I am in the process of re-introducting Hermetic Hosting as a web hosting service to the esoteric community. In this early “Phase Zero” I am looking for early adopters committed to both supporting the library and also to hosting their sites on the same infrastructure used by the Hermetic Library. And, so, Phase Zero of Operation Resurrection: I am looking for at least 10-20 people who will commit to holding an account with a hosting service that is in service to the esoteric community before I set up the new server.

Take a gander at the updated Hermetic Library site and consider if I can be of service to you in hosting your site or your project!

You can also read previous Hermetic Hosting posts on this blog about the re-introduction of Hermetic Hosting, hosting plans and services, some super, but limited time, discounts offered, why you should consider Hermetic Hosting for your site hosting needs; and, the elevator pitch and tl;dr summary.

Whether you want to be part of the initial 10-20 founding early adopters who will commit to being part of Phase Zero, or you wait until the service is completely up and running and join during Phase One; you should consider Hermetic Hosting as a partner in your project. I’d sure like to be of service, and hope you’ll be part of the project.

There will be more to say over time, but I wanted to mention some of the recent updates. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments or concerns; or, you know, if you want to join in Project Resurrection!

Hermetic Hosting tl;dr

So, I’ve posted a lot this week about Hermetic Hosting. Here’s the elevator pitch:

Hermetic Hosting will offer shared web-hosting services that have all the buzzwords and features, and it is the service on which I will run the Hermetic Library itself, so you know I’ll be committed to keeping it up and running! In summary, the service is reliable, secure and highly configurable; suitable for a wide range of clients from individuals who are just learning to put together their first site to the professional website developer looking to place their own clients with a superior hosting service.

This will be professional quality hosting, where you have full access to all the tools you need to manage and configure your services. Service will be on Robust, Enterprise-class Infrastructure; be Secure and Safe; have Full-featured Email; allow you full Website Management, Traffic Statistics, Pre-installed Programs, Advanced Web Features; and, all the Developer-friendly Features you need to do just about anything you can imagine.

Let me summarize my various other posts and what I am asking from you:

  • I want to upgrade the infrastructure I use for the Hermetic Library.
  • I want to offer hosting services to the esoteric community as well.
  • I would like you to be one of 10-20 early adopters to commit to use Hermetic Hosting in order to get the new infrastructure up and running.
  • As an early adopter, you will pay for at least 1 year of hosting in advance. (Typically, that will be the Starter plan at $85.86/yr.)
  • I can set up a temporary space for you, on my current service, gratis, at no charge, until the new server is ready, and only start the year of service once the new server is up and running
  • On the other hand, if you aren’t able to be part of Phase Zero, consider joining Hermetic Hosting later on in Phase One!

In order to become an early adopter, there’s really just three steps:

  1. Contact me to arrange pre-payment in advance for at least a year of service.
  2. Register a domain name, or names, via dns.hermetichosting.com if you want to use me as your registrar, or you can use any other domain registrar. I just, personally and strongly, advise against using GoDaddy, as they are evil, the WalMart of registrars. Once you register a domain name, or if you already have one, I will let you know what name servers to use for the temporary hosting space I can set up for you in step 3.
  3. Then, I can set up a temporary site for you, if you want one in the interim, and get your email configured how you like and so forth. You’ll be up and running!

So, now you’ve read the previous re-introduction, heard about hosting plans and services, you know about some super, but limited time, discounts offered, you have heard some more about what will make Hermetic Hosting unique in the community and why you should consider Hermetic Hosting for your site hosting needs; and, now, you’ve heard the elevator pitch and tl;dr summary.

There will be more to say over time, but I wanted to start getting the word out. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments or concerns; or, you know, if you want to join in Project Resurrection!

Hermetic Hosting is full of win

Already this week I re-introduced Hermetic Hosting, described a variety of site hosting options, and then outlined some really sweet and special discounts for early adopters.

But, there really are a lot of options for site hosting these days and I’d like to talk about why you might decide to have Hermetic Hosting as your hosting provider. I think using the services offered by Hermetic Hosting is a unique win-win-win for you, the Hermetic Library and for the larger esoteric community. Let me tell you why I think that.

Hermetic Hosting provides the infrastructure for the Hermetic Library, so allowing Hermetic Hosting to be of service to you helps the Hermetic Library be of service to the community as well.

Further, my conception of Hermetic Hosting is that it be in service to the community in other ways as well. First, by being uniquely responsive to the needs of the esoteric community for reliable and professional hosting services. Second, by being uniquely socially conscious and providing special discounts for non-profits, sponsoring sites for special organizations, and helping the Hermetic Library continue to offer a place for the sites of luminaries within the community and preserving archives of important community sites.

Moreover, I intend to reserve a healthy portion of any eventual profit from hosting services to create a fund with which to sponsor events, creative endeavours and research related to the mission of the Hermetic Library. In other words, I am committed to the creation of a philanthropic fund which will be used to award grants to important work within the community.

I think Hermetic Hosting can and will be an important and integral part of the community.

When I first started thinking about the opportunity I had to take on care for the Hermetic Library, I had in mind something like Hermetic Hosting. And, I did a bit of research; I talked to people. There have been other attempts to create hosting services specifically for the esoteric community, but it seems to me that the ones I found, that existed or exist, are usually far too narrowly conceived, being really aimed at a specific “current” within the larger esoteric community, or just simply not that well conceived. There may be one out there that is doing something similar to what I’m talking about, and doing it well; but, honestly, I haven’t heard about it.

What other options are there? There’s always the deals with the devil that can be had from the Walmart-like and Target-like hosting services out there. But, really, is hosting your esoteric site really served by that kind of procrustean deal where your money goes to lobbying Congress to destroy the Internet and dismantling the public domain, cruelly hunting elephants in Africa, or other bizarre, anti-employee and anti-customer and moreover anti-egregore, practices? Is that the kind of foundation you want for your work in the world and hosting you online?

Now, I do know there are also some really awesome hosting providers in local communities around. I fully support their work and I’m glad they are doing their best to be better than the large, impersonal and, frankly, evil commodity service providers. You could definitely do worse than working with one of these local and responsible companies. But, as awesome as those are, hosting with Hermetic Hosting specifically helps to support the esoteric community, and helps to support the ongoing mission of the Hermetic Library; and, obviously I say so myself, that’s something that is and will be completely and forever unique about Hermetic Hosting.

There really doesn’t seem to be anyone ethically and effectively offering hosting services to the esoteric community. I intend Hermetic Hosting to be the kind of service that I personally can be proud of offering and that I am proud to use for my own projects. I hope Hermetic Hosting will be the service that meets that need for you too.

It seems to me that the demographic in which both you and I exist is particularly difficult for traditional services to influence through advertising because such organizations and members are far more influenced by personal recommendations.

I hope that the reputation and service of the Hermetic Library will help Hermetic Hosting to meet this uniquely difficult and important need because the library already has had a vast audience for more than a decade. And, of course, I hope that Hermetic Hosting is able to be of service to the community in a reciprocal way that does justice to the reputation of the Hermetic Library as well!

In addition to offering a great array of standard services, the Hermetic Library and Hermetic Hosting offer some particular services to the community which are really unique.

Hermetic Hosting will offer special accounts to help non-profit groups get online inexpensively. We also sponsor important sites for organizations, in exchange for reciprocal brand awareness. While sponsorship is common, offering especially low-priced non-profit accounts is uncommon.

Further, by offering special hosting relationships with luminaries who wish to be hosted at the Hermetic Library, Hermetic Hosting provides the foundation for a unique and exclusive service offered by no other company. Many of these luminaries, because they are from the alternative community, need somewhere to host their materials that understands the community and supports making esoteric information available; and the Hermetic Library has been providing that service for 15 years already.

With your help, here’s to the next 15 years! And, together with you and the esoteric community, here’s to the next 15 after that!

So, now you’ve read the previous re-introduction, heard about hosting plans and services, you know about some super, but limited time, discounts offered; and, now you have heard some more about what will make Hermetic Hosting unique in the community and why you should consider Hermetic Hosting for your site hosting needs.

Whether you want to be part of the initial 10-20 founding early adopters who will commit to being part of Phase Zero, or you wait until the service is completely up and running and join during Phase One; you should consider Hermetic Hosting as a partner in your project. Hermetic Hosting as easy as 1, 2, 3 … Infinity!

On Monday, I posted a re-introduction to Hermetic Hosting. Yesterday, I talked specifically about some projected service plans. Today, I’m going to post about an idea to help really get Hermetic Hosting up and running both strong and quickly by offering some really sweet and special discounts for early adopters.

In order to accelerate the startup of a new Hermetic Hosting, I am going to offer some pretty amazing special account discounts. For a limited time only, special startup packages will be available on all the standard services. This promotion will not last forever, and I won’t tell you when it’s scheduled to end. So, if you want to take advantage of this offer, and help me get past the startup phase quicker; make a commitment to one of these specials now!

  1. Sign up and pay for a full year in advance, and get 10% off that service. Continue your account, and you can keep the 10% off for the life of that service .
  2. Sign up and pay for 2 full year in advance, and get 10% off and a 3rd year of that service will be credited to the account. Continue your account, and you can keep the 10% off for the life of that service.
  3. Sign up for 3 full years in advance, and get 10% off and you will receive a lifetime of that service thereafter! As long as Hermetic Hosting is in business, we’ll have a hosting service up and running for you!

These specials only apply to the specific service being subscribed to an account, and cannot be applied to other or subsequent services, unless they also qualify independently. Startup specials can only be cancelled in the first 30 days for a refund of the unused portion of the service, after which the account fee is non-refundable. Additional charges for excess bandwidth, storage or features are not included; only the service itself as described and the included features at the time of subscription.

Since the point of this promotion is to bring the service as quickly as possible through startup, the secret deadline for these specials is secret, but definitely won’t last forever!

  Non-profit Starter Standard Power
monthly $3.95 $7.95 $15.95 $24.95
1 year $42.66 $85.86 $172.26 $269.46
2 year $85.32 $171.72 $344.52 $538.92
3 to infinity $127.98 $257.58 $516.78 $808.38

Those are some great incentives to join early, to make a commitment to support both the Hermetic Library and Hermetic Hosting all while getting professional-grade hosting!

So, now you’ve read the previous introduction, heard about hosting plans and services, and now you know about some super, but limited time, discounts Hermetic Hosting will offer.

Hermetic Hosting has a plan

Yesterday, I posted an introduction to Hermetic Hosting, and talked a little about the history and the plan in general. If you haven’t read that post, take a gander. That previous post talks about Phase Zero of Operation Resurrection, the re-introduction of Hermetic Hosting as a niche hosting service for the esoteric community.

Now I’m going to talk about Phase One of Hermetic Hosting, which is what happens after the new server is up and running, and projected hosting plans in specific. You may be wondering what kind of hosting accounts will be offered, what features are included, and how much they will cost.

Here is what I’m thinking about and currently plan to offer. There are several web hosting levels based on, if you wish, archetypes of use:

  • Starter – $7.95/mo
  • Standard – $15.95/mo
  • Power – $24.95/mo
  • Economy – $3.95/mo
  • Luminary – No Charge
  • Sponsored – Special
  • Custom – Special

All plans include the same extensive functionality. Each is differentiated by the amount of space and bandwidth available. For economy and luminary hosting, there are special qualifications.

Bandwidth and disk space are right-sized to the needs of each target client. The term “right-sized” means that our accounts include more disk space and bandwidth than will be needed by the customers in that target group.

We also offer transition support for clients moving from existing services, including entirely managed migration, for those non-technical clients needing that level of personalized technical support.

Our projected shared web-hosting services have all the buzzwords and features. In summary, our service is reliable, secure and highly configurable; suitable for a wide range of clients from individuals who are just learning to put together their first site to the professional website developer looking to place their own clients with a superior hosting service.

Starter Hosting — “Water”

2 GB space
50 GB bandwidth
Same great features
$7.95/mo

A popular package for small sites: great value with room to grow.
This package is targeted primarily at individuals and small organizations.

Standard Hosting — “Air”

5 GB space
125 GB bandwidth
Same great features
$15.95/mo

This is the plan that’s “just right” for mid-size sites.
This package is primarily targeted at small businesses.

Power Hosting — “Fire”

10 GB space
250 GB bandwidth
Same great features
$24.95/mo

Perfect for larger sites or those with multimedia content like videos.
This package is primarily targeted at larger businesses and power users.

Economy Hosting — “Earth”

1 GB space
25 GB bandwidth
Same great features
$3.95/mo

Typically, clients looking to host inexpensively have been force to use a free hosting service that places obtrusive ads over their content. At Hermetic Hosting there are no ads, not even on our economy account. And, this account, while surprisingly inexpensive, includes all the secure, robust and green features of our other accounts. All the features are the same, just the disk and bandwidth are right-sized.

Economy hosting will be targeted at two demographic groups: Non-profit and Fraternal. For these target groups, economy hosting is intended to get people up and running with reliable and affordable start-up service that they would upgrade later to one of the regular accounts when ready.

Non-profit

The first is non-profit economy hosting. This special plan is reserved for sites that have a public service mission, such as homeless shelters, environmental groups, health advocacy groups, etc, who would otherwise be unable to afford web hosting.

Non-profit Qualification

There are three criteria: 1) Are you a non-profit, social service agency, or school? 2) Is your organization’s mission to serve the public good? 3) Can your organization not afford the regular web hosting rates?

If you can answer yes to all three of the above questions, than you qualify for the non-profit rate. 501(c)(3) status is not required.

Non-profit Disqualification

Sites that are for personal use, hobby groups, and other organizations that do not have a public service component do not qualify. While these types of clients may not “make a profit”, they do not qualify as “non-profit” for the purpose of this plan. This plan is for those serving the public good, who otherwise would not be able to afford our quality web hosting, as a way of saying thank you for their service to the common good and enabling them to reach their philanthropic goals.

Fraternal

The second is fraternal economy hosting. The criteria for this plan are that the group is a fraternal organization or the person is a member of OTO or AA who needs to start out small, or has been a supporter of the Hermetic Library.

Luminary Hosting — “Æthyr”

Luminaries may wish to be included in The Hermetic Library using a managed hosting service, where they do not have direct control over their content. This is the status quo. Luminaries offer their content for inclusion in The Hermetic Library, in exchange for free managed hosting. This offers the luminary exposure to the significant audience that comes to Hermetic.com and The Hermetic Library seeking information. What The Hermetic Library gets is high quality content for the collection, which in turn drives more traffic to the site, which in turn offers more brand exposure and reach without the expense of advertising.

Flexible limitations, but completely managed by The Hermetic Library
No charge/Quid pro quo

Sponsored — “Philosopher’s Stone”

Several standard accounts will be granted on a philanthropic-basis, in exchange for free advertising or in order to become an event sponsor to raise brand awareness. These leverage our low overhead to create brand awareness in situations not otherwise available to any marketing initiatives.

Limitations based on the account offered
No charge/Quid pro quo

Custom Accounts & Services — “Elixir of Life”

Customers sometimes need special configurations and features, and Hermetic Hosting, Inc. has the expertise and infrastructure to create these special product offerings. Perhaps a customer needs a private USENET discussion server, a private Key Server for public encryption keys, or some another specialized implementation, and we can create a custom order for these services.

The final plan is for special product development, which will be done on a consulting basis when necessary. By structuring custom product development on a consulting basis, I can ensure that I do not spend time creating labor-intensive custom plans without securing equally custom and appropriate fees. Typically, custom accounts will be developed in coordination with external consultants, who are paid on a contingency basis or in an income-sharing structure; which leverages the extensive professional technical and design network of Hermetic Hosting and its principles. This particular plan is likely to be a rare one, but I wanted to contemplate something for the future.

So, now you’ve read the previous introduction, and now you know more specifics about what kinds of services Hermetic Hosting will offer.

I’ve got more to write more about Hermetic Hosting, and some very special offers for people willing to help Hermetic Hosting get off to a great start, in the coming days. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments or concerns; or, you know, if you want to join in Project Resurrection!

Re-Introducing Hermetic Hosting

If you take a gander back at what the Hermetic Library looked like from its inception until the year 2000, you will notice that the original tag for the site was “Web Hosting for the Spiritual Arts”.

You may also know that I offer domain name registration services as a reseller for OpenSRS, which is the registrar created by Tucows in Canada. (You may recognize Tucows if you’re a Internet veteran as one of the original file repositories, where free software and shareware were made available. They still offer that service, in fact.) I created a temporary logo for the service, and you may have seen that around as one of the sister sites to the library:

What you may not know is that one of the things I wanted to do, when I first took over the Hermetic Library, was to create a niche service specifically to offer hosting to sites and projects using the same infrastructure as I was using to host the library itself, and all the related sites I have developed such as the Hrmtc Underground and the Hermeneuticon. I also use the same infrastructure for my personal sites, such as Arlecchino Malbenvolio, and offer to host sites that I develop for others through Xarc Design.

The truth is you might not know that because I really have not done much to tell people about what I was doing. I bought an incredibly powerful and reliable dedicated server that could have completely run a small hosting service, with all the bells and whistles including RAID 10 and more bandwidth than God. (Seriously, even with all my sites on there, I barely registered on the CPU or the Network capacity!) I really did create the infrastructure to offer professional, high quality and full featured site hosting for those interested in supporting the library and working with a service provider that was aware of the needs of esoteric sites. I wanted to do better than some commodity hosting service, or worse one that has an “Evil in a Bad Way” CEO. After all, why pay people who have nothing to do with the community to host an esoteric site, or deal with a hosting provider that doesn’t know and doesn’t care about the community, let alone about simple decency in general.

But, honestly, after paying for the best, I just did not do much to leverage that infrastructure into a full-on implementation of my plan for Hermetic Hosting. I ran out of money to support it on my own. After shouldering the cost of a really amazing but expensive server while at the same time not doing anything much to get the word out that I could offer hosting that was in service to the community, I migrated all my sites to cheap commodity hosting. Yeah, the same kind of cheap commodity hosting to which I wanted to offer a better, more reliable and more responsible alternative! And, I’ve really been slumming it for a while now. Frankly, it sucks. There’s not enough bandwidth and they really aren’t reliable. They also are not really very responsive to support request even when they cause the problem. And, they’re constantly under attack from DDoS since they host so many sites. It’s kind of like a bad dream, really, a nightmare.

I want to wake back up to the happy dreamlands of a dedicated server! Seriously, when I had the dedicated server, I had zero downtime and no site throttling issues while I watched other sites go down multiple times and have all kinds of technical issues. It was, quite simply, a dream setup for the site, and would have been amazing for other sites too.

However, the only way I can do that anymore, is if I start with a number of people committed to both supporting the library and also to hosting their sites on the same infrastructure. And, so, Phase Zero of Operation Resurrection:

I am looking for at least 10-20 people who will commit to holding an account with a hosting service that is in service to the esoteric community before I set up the new server.

So, that’s just the introduction! I’m going to write more about Hermetic Hosting, and specifics, in the coming days.

Whether you want to be part of the founding 10-20 initial people who will commit to being part of Phase Zero, or you wait until the service is completely up and running and join during Phase One; you should consider Hermetic Hosting as a partner in your project. I’d sure like to be of service, and hope you’ll be part of the project.
