Reader’s Theatre: Household Gods, Thu Sep 21, 7-9pm Pacific, in voice chat

Greetings everyone!

I want to invite you to Reader’s Theatre on Hrmtc Underground voice chat on the Third Thursday in September: Thursday, September 21st at 7pm Pacific.

We’re going to share unrehearsed and un-staged reading Household Gods by Aleister Crowley. Consider participating in this by showing up and volunteering to read. If it’s just me, I’ll probably read a few selections; but if there’s some volunteers we may rotate through lines so everyone gets to read a similar amount, not assigned parts. That’s worked pretty well in the past.

Okay, that was the short elevator pitch version. Here’s the longer explanation:

What I have in mind is a low key gathering where people share un-staged and unrehearsed readings of stories, poetry and dramatic works with each other.

The guests of the library are direct inheritors of a rather rich creative culture, both in general and specific. Not only was Aleister Crowley noted for his creative works, but the wider body of poetic and dramatic works from the broad world of contemporaries and those inspired by Aleister Crowley, including many members of the Golden Dawn, offer an amazing array of wonderful culture and artistic heritage we often don’t explore.

Specifically, many people are at least aware that Aleister Crowley was a poet, but few are familiar with the extent of his poetic and dramatic work, both under his own name and under pseudonyms. There’s some few well-known poetic works like the Hymn of Pan and a couple others, but the scope of his poetic output is often unfamiliar. Crowley also wrote quite a number of dramatic works, though most people have only heard of the Rites of Eleusis and perhaps The Ship.

You can find the text of this play at the library, and can have that page open for the event to either follow along or, even better, participate as a reader!

Aleister Crowley’s Household Gods

Recognizing that public speaking and performance are often cited as one of the greatest fears for most people, this will be a safe and supportive environment to explore and expand that personal edge while we share this reading.

This event will take place on Hrmtc Underground’s voice chat for Hermetic Library. So head on over and create an account, if you haven’t already, so you’re all set up for the night of the event.

This is a public event; open to all. There is a suggested contribution of $1.00 to help keep the library going, and consider becoming an ongoing Patron of the work of the library.

Reader’s Theatre: Bawdy, Erotic & Obscene, Thu Aug 17, 7-9pm Pacific, in voice chat

Greetings everyone!

I want to invite you to Reader’s Theatre on Hrmtc Underground voice chat on the Third Thursday in August: Thursday, August 17th at 7pm Pacific.

We’re going to share unrehearsed and un-staged readings of bawdy, erotic and obscene poetry and more by Aleister Crowley, his contemporaries and others. Consider material you’d like to share and bring those as well, especially if you’ve work in mind by someone otherwise thought to be upright and proper and completely above such raucous and nasty rhymes!

Please consider bringing a couple selected works to share, either digitally on a device, to save paper, or, if you needs must, that you’ve printed out. A few suggestions of places to start looking include:

Aleister Crowley’s Leah Sublime

Aleister Crowley’s White Stains

The Songs of Bilitis by Pierre Louÿs

If you aren’t sure where else to look for selections, there are a number of books which have materials by Aleister Crowley that may be useful in finding something to share with others at a Reader’s Theatre. If you don’t have them yourself, or you want versions you can easily search through and print out, gander in these locations as possible initial rabbit holes into what all is available:

Aleister Crowley’s
Collected Works
The Equinox
The International

Poetry
Dramatic Works

Also, you might try using the site search to find material about some keyword that interests you. Site search at the Hermetic Library can be found in the upper right corner of most pages, or simply start at the site search portal for texts at the Hermetic Library.

Library News for July 2016

It’s the 15th of July and that means there is only one month left until the submissions deadline for this year’s anthology. This anthology is going to be awesome and a great way to celebrate the 20th year of the library online! Be sure to check out all eleven past anthologies. Gander at the call for submissions to the 2016 anthology. Consider participating and spreading the word to those who may be interested.

Call for Submissions for Magick Music and Ritual 12

I currently have a number of other things going on as well.

First off, slightly off topic for the library, I’ve got another anthology I’ve just started up this year. All the technical details are pretty much the same, but this one is for my geeky, nerdy persona as Rigaroga. Also, there’s actually a theme for this one. You can check out the call for submissions to BENT BROKEN BEAUTIFUL, the first anthology for Rigaroga’s Odd Order for more.

Listen to the first Reader’s Theatre! Become a Reader; consider sending in your reading. I have had no submissions since releasing this first selection, so have no idea when I can put another one together. I need participation for this to continue happening, so join me! It’s super easy and I’m sure you’ve got some favourite material you’d like to share with others.

Reader's Theatre with Hermetic Library

With special thanks to ongoing Patrons of the library and supporters of the 2016 Funding Campaign, most recently, I released the first Hermetic Library Zine, for June! I’ll put out another zine as soon as I’ve got enough submissions, so send in your material soon, or, now! Check out the call for submissions to the zine, or head over to Hermetic Library’s digital publications.

Finally, in that strange way that things work out, even if they’re falling apart … I recently moved myself, the library cats, and the library to a new location, a new Abbey of the Library. It was a bit expected and unexpected. It was a bit of stress and relief. I’m now even more removed into the semi-civilized woods of Cascadia. The place I’ve ended up had significantly reduced my expenses, but at the same time I’ve ended up with some crazy ideas. Although along a

I’m thinking about how any abbey should have things like a monkish brew of ale and an herbal liqueur. I’m also thinking that I now have actual land on which a physical library and reading room could actually be built. I’m thinking about the feakin’ awesome idea of creating Abramelin and Holy Anointing cocktail bitters.

And, I’m thinking about the possibility for offering a residency program! If you are interested in talking about becoming part of an experimental trial run of what may turn into Hermetic Library’s residency program, get in touch!

I’m thinking 3 or 6 month residencies for creatives, scholars, and practitioners; offering a place for physical, mental and spiritual improvements and work can be done in-residence at the new Abbey of the Library. I imagine that this would be an exchange, where those engaged in the residency program would also offer to help with some physical, mental and spiritual improvements and work at the library as well. This place is not yet set up for a real residency program, but there’s potential enough for an experiment to be possible.

This isn’t going to be a resort, by any stretch of the imagination. Currently there’s a very rustic, almost off-grid feel to the situation. The amount of land is limited. I also have to admit that I’m struggling to cope with the fact that the best and only broadband option is satellite, which significantly curtails what I’m used to being able to do online.

But, it’s not nothing. I have the opportunity to be of service by offering a way to get away from things and reduce living expenses so those in residency can focus on their work. Nothing is set in stone, and I’m just brainstorming right now. If you’re interested in brainstorming with me about this idea or want to offer support to help make it happen, let me know!

There are so many ways you can help support or participate in the work of the library. Consider how you can start actively participating at the library!

Send me audio (or video) of something from the library site, or something reasonably related, if you’re interested in being part of a Readers Theatre! Here’s an inbox you can upload to my Reader’s Theatre file request folder or just use your file transfer tool of choice and send the link to my email.

Here’s a blurb about Reader’s Theatre, to describe the idea a little more. As an example, here’s an announcement I wrote for a local OTO body where I held several of these:

Come participate in an unrehearsed and un-staged reading of Aleister Crowley’s play The Ship. This play was originally published in Equinox Vol I No 10, in 1913, and is not only the source for the Anthem used in text of Liber XV, the Gnostic Mass, but is a wonderful mystery play and example of dramatic ritual. Consider other material you’d like to share and bring those as well.

Many people are aware that Aleister Crowley was a poet, but few are familiar with the extent of his work. In addition to poetry such as the Hymn of Pan and a few others, Crowley wrote quite a few dramatic works though most people have only heard of the Rites of Eleusis and perhaps The Ship. Further, the wider body of poetic and dramatic works from the broad world of contemporaries and those inspired by Aleister Crowley, including many members of the Golden Dawn, offer an amazing array of wonderful works.

Recognizing that public speaking and performance are one of the greatest fears of most people, this will be a safe and supportive environment to explore and expand that personal edge through readings from the broad corpus of works mentioned above. Attendees will have an opportunity, and are encouraged, to share their own favourite pieces, as well as participate in impromptu, unrehearsed readings of works with others.

And, another:

Let’s share some works with each other that are in the mood of the current season of the elements, appropriate for the upcoming cross-quarter day of Samhain at 15º Scorpio. The theme is: creepy, spooky and strange!
