Summary for the week ending Sept 16, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending September 16th, 2018.

My trip to get the computer fixed went all snafu 1/3 of the way there. So … yeah. Still working on that. Some day, maybe.

Postal Exchange and Publication Subscription perks for Patrons when out, and should probably have all arrived by now. I’ll start working on the next one now!

I had a suggestion for a Research Topic from a Patron, and, oddly enough, that’s the first I time! A Patron suggested they’d like to hear more about the Order of Asiatic Brethren, So, I posted that specific call for submissions, and reached out to a couple of people to see if they had thoughts. This one might be a big hard to get more information about, as I’m told there’s a lot of unpublished material out there, but no one I talked to was able to add more new research. Still, we’ve got the call for submissions out, and we might get lucky and encourage new work.

I did create a new entry on the Hermeneuticon wiki for Order of the Asiatic Brethren which you can gander at. (This article is one of several brand new articles, and I’ll be working on more of those as I am able.)

Also, since this was apparently the first research topic that’s been suggested, I wanted to remind everyone about the Research Topics perk for ongoing Patrons of Hermetic Library. If you’re already a Patron with that perk, consider letting me know, if there are and research topics that you’d like to have posted. If you want to participate in suggesting new research topics, and help support the submissions process for new work on those topics, consider joining in!

I also have created a new short link http://research.hrmtc.com that will arrive at a list of all the posted Research Topics on the library blog.

Hermetic Library Call for Submissions on Research Topics

This weekend I posted a brand new Omnium Gatherum to the blog. It’s been a few years since I’ve done that. When I created the Hrmtc Underground BBS, I’d started to move all my Gatherum activity over there, and that’s still a place for it; but, I haven’t done much of that even there lately. I kinda miss them. So, I’m going to try doing them again, but they’ll be collected posts on the blog, which will also be available over on the BBS.

Don’t forget the rapidly approaching September 30th deadline for the call for submissions to Hermetic Library’s anthology album for 2018, Magick, Music and Ritual 14! If you were waiting, now’s the time to send those in! Really, this time in the process is always so stressful, as I never know if things will come together until they do, usually at the last minute. But, there’s less than a month left. Only a couple weeks. Now’s the time to get on it!

Still looking for help and others to join me in a working community around the library, of course.

Lots of new pages and work on old pages on the site, which is pretty much every week, really. You can always check the front page of the site which shows the most recent changes and new pages, or check out the Recent Changes special page for a full list.

Summary for the week ending Sept 9, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending September 9th, 2018.

Getting geared up for my two day trip as part of still trying to get my main computer repaired, or, what I’m really hoping for from this ordeal, replaced. I’m planning on this week or next, depending on how things fall together. But, that’s a thing that’s going on, along with other stuff still in the works, like a the crowdfunding idea I’m still cooking up, probably for November, and so forth. Got even more books unpacked in the Reading Room, and at some point I’ll have to share a picture of that once it gets sorted enough again.

I have prepared Postal Exchange and Publication Subscription perks for Patrons, with fun things from Hermetic Library Anthology Artist Mustafa al-Laylah! Those will be going out, as soon as today, when I next get to the post office. Huzzah!

Once those are in the post, I will start getting the next one in the pipeline! If you want in on either Postal Exchange or Publication Subscription mailings, join in and help make the magick happen!

Summary for the week ending Sept 2, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending September 2nd, 2018.

This last week, I discovered that posting to the Hermetic Library page on Facebook wasn’t working. As I investigated what happened, I discovered I was locked out of posting for a bit over a day because I’m a page with potential for “high reach” until I enabled 2fA and confirmed my location in the world.

Yeah, so I couldn’t figure out why posts were failing until I logged into Fb for the first time in, what? A month? (Partially because of the computer issues I’ve been having, but also, why go to there, really?) And, oh. I see. I have too many followers, who never see my posts anyway because I can’t and won’t give $ to boost, and Fb thinks I might be eRasputin.

(Seriously, I guess they really don’t know I’m just a tau robe filled with a bunch of cats hiding under a desk in the restricted section of a magical library?!)

Anyhow, everything is fixed and back to normal over there.

But, as an aside, just another reminder that relying on a closed garden like Facebook isn’t a good idea. If the history of platforms on the Internet shows, time and time again: one should always have their own blog and website, and use social media as an enhancement to that where it makes sense, not to place those owned spaces at the center or as the only part of one’s online presence. There’s no guarantees those owned platforms will continue to exist, or that they won’t alter the terms of their agreements in onerous or heinous ways. As happens. Over and over again. Treat walled gardens as dead ends that go at the end of your communication process, to which information should flow, not the center from which information flow starts; especially if you are, like me, doing things on your own and don’t have the ability to be a full-time unpaid content intern for those large corporations, functionally-employed, without benefits and at-will. Okay, enough said.

Switching to more happy and fun news, a package from Hermetic Library Anthology Artist Mustafa al-Laylah with Postal Exchange and Publication Subscription perks has arrived!

I will be preparing that to go out in the next week or two to ongoing Patrons with Postal Exchange and Publication Subscription perks through August. If you want in on the next Postal Exchange or Publication Subscription mailing, head over and help make the magick happen!

Summary for the two weeks ending Aug 26, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for two weeks ending August 26th, 2018.

I missed posting a summary in the middle of these last two weeks, due to reasons, mainly having to do with my desktop machine being sick, and having to deal with all of that. So, this one will be for two weeks! Double the fun!

Current news on the desktop is that it is back from the authorized warranty shop but is still dead. It has multiple things that are failing or that failed, essentially totaling it. I may be able to get it replaced, but I will have to make a trek across the state to one end of Missouri or the other, requiring an overnight stay and two days, to physically carry the machine into a corporate-owned shop in either Saint Louis or Kansas City. I have high hopes that this will be successful, unless Murphy gets involved; but it’s an ordeal. So, I’m considering options on how to make that happen. The saga continues!

Until then, I’m on my laptop, the strongest machine I’ve got right now. It’s been interesting being back to a small screen. When I returned to college after hiatus, I was exclusively on a laptop for all of undergrad and grad school. I recall it worked very well to have a portable device that I could carry with me and had everything on it. Nowadays, not so much. The screen is really small, and I haven’t gotten an update to my prescription eyeglasses in a long time, too long, really. But, it is what it is! It’s a sweet little machine, and it actually works, so there’s that! Just, it’s a little harder to get things done.

I’ve been making progress on the Reading Room. It’s getting there, for some value of there that is where it is now? Yeah. Something I haven’t really talked about is that the Reading Room has been entirely boxed up in storage boxes for the entire time I was up on the mountain. I just didn’t know how long I’d be there, and so it never made sense to unpack all the books. So, I’ve gotten some uppacking done in the Reading Room, as I’ve been settling in. It’s been a treat to be able to put a few books on shelves and all those library-like things one gets to do with real, physical books as part of a balanced media diet. I guess it is fair to say that Hermetic Library is not just Everywhere and Nowhere, but is actually, also, finally, again, Somewhere.

In addition to continued work on getting ready for launching a crowdfunding effort for the idea to create some Hermetic Library Vade Mecum devices, I should shortly be getting a package from Hermetic Library Anthology Artist Mustafa al-Laylah with Postal Exchange and Publication Subscription perks that will be going out at the beginning of September for everyone that’s currently, as of right now, an ongoing Patron at those levels over on Patreon. If you want in on the next Postal Exchange or Publication Subscription mailing, head over and help make the magick happen!

Don’t forget that I announced the call for submissions to Hermetic Library’s anthology album for 2018, Magick, Music and Ritual 14! The first submission has arrived, so it has begun!

Summary for the week ending Aug 12, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending August 12th, 2018.

You may recall I was talking about dealing with some technical stuff. Turns out, my computer is terminal. So, there’s that. I go to pick it up this week, but it, for all intents and purposes, is a shiny metallic doorstop. I’ll put it next to my other shiny metallic doorstop. Oy.

In better news, I’ve been having some conversations about my idea for, apparently this is what I’m calling it now, an Hermetic Library Vade Mecum. I’ve lined up two awesome, well-known luminaries to help. So, I’m currently thinking about a crowdfunding effort starting in November. I’ll have a standard edition of the little portable box, which contains a local copy of the entire Hermetic Library, and all the PDFs, digital publications, and every track from the music anthologies for $666 … and offer gratis annual updates with everything new for as long as I am librarian. Then, there will also be some special edition boxes, custom and unique and limited edition works of art, as well! I’m excited by what we’ve been talking about doing, and I think you will be too! More details as we get closer will be revealed …

Summary for the week ending Aug 5, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending August 5th, 2018.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks at the library because I’ve been having technical issues with my primary computer. I’ve been working through trying to figure out what was going on, literally testing everything, just trying to isolate the fault that has made it unusable. I’ve got it finally 100% isolated to a hardware fault, and, amazingly, whilst stressing out about how I can’t afford to replace or fix it, I discovered that I actually have 1 week left of my extended support contract! This will be the 3rd time I’ve had a machine that has gone haywire and an extended service contract has saved my bacon. Well, my bacon isn’t saved quite yet. I’m travelling 2 hours each way tomorrow morning to take my machine in to the closest service center. I have high hopes that all will return to working order shortly, but, whew! I’d call it luck, but really, since I had to pay for the extra support contract, it’s foresight. But, either way, that’s a bright light in troubling times. Am I right?

I’ve actually thought about this idea for years, as something I’d like to do at some point. Perhaps now is the time? Let me describe to you my idea for, shall we say, an Hermetic Library Vade Mecum.

What if I built a little portable box, which contained a local copy of the entire Hermetic Library, and all the PDFs, digital publications, and every track from the music anthologies for $666 … and offered gratis annual updates with everything new for as long as I am librarian?

“Vade mecum” is a Latin term literally meaning “go with me” and was historically a book that one carried with them everywhere so it could be consulted easily at hand, usually small and portable, and that fit in a pocket. And, it’s both suitable and funny for this idea!

Not only would it be awesome to have, just because; but, this would be a complete package with the entire site, plus all anthologies, & more, annual updates, NAS server in a custom case, and helps support the library. It would be portable and private, so you could take it anywhere, plug it in, and there’d be a private network to connect to so you could read and share the contents. It’d also be secure from a loss of net neutrality, packet sniffing observation over the Internet, and a great way to have access to everything distributed to people who want it and can share it in case of some disaster that takes us all back to dial-up or worse. Also, by having several of these distributed in the wild, that would be a great form of back-up for the library in case something were to happen to me that made it difficult or impossible to keep going. I’m thinking distributed disaster recovery here, as well as creating something super spiffy.

Technically, it’d probably be a Raspberry Pi, with networking and storage. With some nifty custom designed case. Network attached storage and also web server to provide the local copy? Maybe with a DAC to play the anthology to any speakers you wanted? Something cool like that. Something like a PirateBox, “a portable electronic device, often consisting of a Wi-Fi router and a device for storing information, creating a wireless network that allows users who are connected to share files anonymously and locally.” But, I’d put it in a cool custom case, maybe even special commissioned designs, and then keep it filled with all the great content from all the Hermetic Library projects!

You know, if at least 10 people would commit to this idea by pre-ordering one, I’d make ’em. If 10 people would pre-order through a crowdfunding campaign, I could get all the supplies I need and have the ability to focus on making it happen. And, they’d be really awesome, and only get better with every update. What do you think? Are you, or someone you know, interested and able to commit? I’m making a list. If you know that you want one, let me know!

Don’t forget that I announced the call for submissions to Hermetic Library’s anthology album for 2018, Magick, Music and Ritual 14! The first submission has arrived, so it has begun!
