Summary for the week ending Nov 4th, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending November 4th, 2018.

Last week, and the next two are likely to be a bit quiet, but there’s actually a bunch going on. I was going to just post a note that I’d skip a summary this week, but then I thought of a bunch of things that I’ve been doing to talk about. So, not so much activity on the blog, and so on, but there’s actually a bunch to talk about even still.

First, in the ongoing saga of my computer, I finally heard news after a week in the shop. They had not done any repairs. Apparently one of the parts is on backorder until some time, at least, in December. So, I could wait for that, which would add at least another couple months to the time I’ve been without a working desktop. Or, they finally decided to offer, a kind of replacement. Instead of a full replacement, they are willing to apply the entire repair bill as a kind of trade-in credit for a new machine. Looks like I’ll be heading in to the shop again next week to see about that option, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll be heading home with a new machine, under new warranty, for about half off; which, let’s be clear, is still not cheap, and certainly not a warranty-covered repair solution at no additional cost. Anyhow, the saga continues.

I’m mostly over the flu I picked up last trip, just in time for another trip. Huzzah!

I’m working on the upcoming anthology, which is due to release in less than a month. Oh, wow. Time flies! I’ve got some cover ideas submitted by a new artist, and I’ve got the playlist to sort through. But, everything should be ready in time! The anthologies are a highlight of my year, and it’s a lot of fun to put them together and then share them with everyone. I’m looking forward to releasing this next anthology into the wild for you all.

I’m also working on a new interview with a musician who’s been influenced by esotericism, and I’m not sure when that will be ready; but, I’ll post that as soon as it is done. The way I do the interviews, is that I send some initial questions, and when I get answers, I add additional questions; repeating that process until there’s what feels like a complete interview. I’ve been doing new interviews pretty much monthly over on Rigaroga’s Odd Order with some people in the streaming community, but haven’t done an interview for the library in a while. So, I’m excited to share this one when it is done.

Still looking for help and others to join me in a working community around the library, of course.

Lots of new pages and work on old pages on the site, which is pretty much every week, really. You can always check the front page of the site which shows the most recent changes and new pages, or check out the Recent Changes special page for a full list.

Summary for the week ending Oct 28, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending October 28th, 2018.

I spent the week, and have continued, fighting with a flu I picked up whilst on my travels to try and fix my computer the previous week, which is still in the shop getting major surgery. I knew I was screwed when I overheard my transit driver for one leg of the trip talking with another passenger about recovering from two weeks of flu. I pretty much knew at that point I’d be bringing home an illness as a souvenir. And, I did. I started getting an itchy throat in the first days after, and I’ve been increasingly under the weather since. I may be finally starting to recover more than not? I hope. Anyhow, I spent most of the last week feeling awful, and nursing myself. I might even be well by the time I have to do the whole trip again to pick up whatever Frankenstein’s Monster my machine is becoming, once the butchers have finished their ministrations.

On the bright side, I had the new release of “Part 1” of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to watch. If you’ve followed along for long enough, you’ll remember that I’ve read the Afterlife with Archie and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics, as I’ve mentioned them, variously, and on the blog starting around 2014. So, I was prepared and have been looking forward to that. I mentioned in one place that I haven’t been as excited for what’s to come, after watching some teasers and trailers, since the taurobolium scene in Rome s01e01. But, it was both more and different that I expected. Quite enjoyable. Not absolutely perfect, but darned good and better than I’d hoped in so many ways. Better than the shit representation and twisted inspired-by-history in some recent disappointing and, for me, unwatchable, shows. *cough* Strange Angel *cough* This Chilling Adventures of Sabrina show, rather, seemed to me just right as a mix of great production and acting through creepy and campy narrative with significant representation.

This week I published a guest post, a successful submission supported by all the ongoing Patrons of Hermetic Library, that you should check out. The Unknown Soror by Heather Schubert, an essay identifying Soror Fiat Yod, correspondent with Aleister Crowley in Magick Without Tears, as Anne Maria Macky née Hawkins. I understand that this essay will also appear in an upcoming issue of The Daughters of Babalon, an anthology of works by a broad range of modern writers and artists that captures the rich and multifaceted aspects of the feminine current of Thelema. Consider checking out that anthology, but you can see this essay here at Hermetic Library first!

Summary for the week ending Oct 14, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending October 14th, 2018.

I’m going to be trying, again, to get my computer fixed, which is a big ordeal, and two days of travel across the state and back; but, wish me luck! Hopefully I’ll have a working desktop machine again soon. So mote it be.

I had a suggestion for a new Research Topic from a Patron who would like to hear more about Enneagrams, So, I posted that specific call for submissions. This and related topics, like G I Gurdjieff and the Forth Way, are not something that I’ve got much on at the library, so this is a great suggestion where more could be done, including articles for the blog, resources at the library, and entries for the Hermeneuticon wiki.

As a reminder, there is a Research Topics perk for ongoing Patrons of Hermetic Library. If you’re already a Patron with that perk, consider letting me know, if there are and research topics that you’d like to have posted. If you want to participate in suggesting new research topics, and help support the submissions process for new work on those topics, consider joining in!

I also have created a new short link http://research.hrmtc.com that will arrive at a list of all the posted Research Topics on the library blog.

Hermetic Library Call for Submissions on Research Topics

I’ve made an offer for a guest post that I hope to have posted this week or next, so watch for that. This is a successful submission that was an idea the author pitched, made it through the submissions process, and I’m excited for when I can share it with you soon.

You may also be interested to hear that I’ve just released the third anthology album for Rigaroga’s Odd Order. As a reminder, Rigaroga is my techno-geek persona, and Odd Order is a space for nerdish and geeky stuff that I’m involved in. The 2018 release is BIT NIBBLE BYTE, with 5 tracks from 4 new and returning artists. Check that out and consider picking it up as a digital download!

Summary for the week ending Sept 30, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending September 30th, 2018.

This was the last week for the call for submissions to Hermetic Library’s anthology album for 2018, Magick, Music and Ritual 14! I’ve got submissions to get sorted and see about creating a cogent playlist for the upcoming release. The library anthology will release around the anniversary of the site’s birth, in December. Meanwhile, I’ve also got a geekier anthology for Rigaroga’s Odd Order that I’ll release as soon as it is done, so consider watching for that in the near future.

Summary for the week ending Sept 23, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending September 23rd, 2018.

This is the last week, the last few days, before the rapidly approaching September 30th deadline for the call for submissions to Hermetic Library’s anthology album for 2018, Magick, Music and Ritual 14! If you were waiting, now’s the time to send those in! Really, this time in the process is always so stressful, as I never know if things will come together until they do, usually at the last minute. But, there’s less than a month left. Only a couple weeks. Now’s the time to get on it!

Summary for the week ending Sept 16, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending September 16th, 2018.

My trip to get the computer fixed went all snafu 1/3 of the way there. So … yeah. Still working on that. Some day, maybe.

Postal Exchange and Publication Subscription perks for Patrons when out, and should probably have all arrived by now. I’ll start working on the next one now!

I had a suggestion for a Research Topic from a Patron, and, oddly enough, that’s the first I time! A Patron suggested they’d like to hear more about the Order of Asiatic Brethren, So, I posted that specific call for submissions, and reached out to a couple of people to see if they had thoughts. This one might be a big hard to get more information about, as I’m told there’s a lot of unpublished material out there, but no one I talked to was able to add more new research. Still, we’ve got the call for submissions out, and we might get lucky and encourage new work.

I did create a new entry on the Hermeneuticon wiki for Order of the Asiatic Brethren which you can gander at. (This article is one of several brand new articles, and I’ll be working on more of those as I am able.)

Also, since this was apparently the first research topic that’s been suggested, I wanted to remind everyone about the Research Topics perk for ongoing Patrons of Hermetic Library. If you’re already a Patron with that perk, consider letting me know, if there are and research topics that you’d like to have posted. If you want to participate in suggesting new research topics, and help support the submissions process for new work on those topics, consider joining in!

This weekend I posted a brand new Omnium Gatherum to the blog. It’s been a few years since I’ve done that. When I created the Hrmtc Underground BBS, I’d started to move all my Gatherum activity over there, and that’s still a place for it; but, I haven’t done much of that even there lately. I kinda miss them. So, I’m going to try doing them again, but they’ll be collected posts on the blog, which will also be available over on the BBS.

Summary for the week ending Sept 9, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending September 9th, 2018.

Getting geared up for my two day trip as part of still trying to get my main computer repaired, or, what I’m really hoping for from this ordeal, replaced. I’m planning on this week or next, depending on how things fall together. But, that’s a thing that’s going on, along with other stuff still in the works, like a the crowdfunding idea I’m still cooking up, probably for November, and so forth. Got even more books unpacked in the Reading Room, and at some point I’ll have to share a picture of that once it gets sorted enough again.

I have prepared Postal Exchange and Publication Subscription perks for Patrons, with fun things from Hermetic Library Anthology Artist Mustafa al-Laylah! Those will be going out, as soon as today, when I next get to the post office. Huzzah!

Summary for the week ending Sept 2, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending September 2nd, 2018.

This last week, I discovered that posting to the Hermetic Library page on Facebook wasn’t working. As I investigated what happened, I discovered I was locked out of posting for a bit over a day because I’m a page with potential for “high reach” until I enabled 2fA and confirmed my location in the world.

Yeah, so I couldn’t figure out why posts were failing until I logged into Fb for the first time in, what? A month? (Partially because of the computer issues I’ve been having, but also, why go to there, really?) And, oh. I see. I have too many followers, who never see my posts anyway because I can’t and won’t give $ to boost, and Fb thinks I might be eRasputin.

(Seriously, I guess they really don’t know I’m just a tau robe filled with a bunch of cats hiding under a desk in the restricted section of a magical library?!)

Anyhow, everything is fixed and back to normal over there.

But, as an aside, just another reminder that relying on a closed garden like Facebook isn’t a good idea. If the history of platforms on the Internet shows, time and time again: one should always have their own blog and website, and use social media as an enhancement to that where it makes sense, not to place those owned spaces at the center or as the only part of one’s online presence. There’s no guarantees those owned platforms will continue to exist, or that they won’t alter the terms of their agreements in onerous or heinous ways. As happens. Over and over again. Treat walled gardens as dead ends that go at the end of your communication process, to which information should flow, not the center from which information flow starts; especially if you are, like me, doing things on your own and don’t have the ability to be a full-time unpaid content intern for those large corporations, functionally-employed, without benefits and at-will. Okay, enough said.

Switching to more happy and fun news, a package from Hermetic Library Anthology Artist Mustafa al-Laylah with Postal Exchange and Publication Subscription perks has arrived!

Hermetic Library Postal Exchange Publication Subscription Mustafa al Laylah August 2018

I will be preparing that to go out in the next week or two to ongoing Patrons with Postal Exchange and Publication Subscription perks through August. If you want in on the next Postal Exchange or Publication Subscription mailing, head over and help make the magick happen!

Summary for the two weeks ending Aug 26, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for two weeks ending August 26th, 2018.

I missed posting a summary in the middle of these last two weeks, due to reasons, mainly having to do with my desktop machine being sick, and having to deal with all of that. So, this one will be for two weeks! Double the fun!

Current news on the desktop is that it is back from the authorized warranty shop but is still dead. It has multiple things that are failing or that failed, essentially totaling it. I may be able to get it replaced, but I will have to make a trek across the state to one end of Missouri or the other, requiring an overnight stay and two days, to physically carry the machine into a corporate-owned shop in either Saint Louis or Kansas City. I have high hopes that this will be successful, unless Murphy gets involved; but it’s an ordeal. So, I’m considering options on how to make that happen. The saga continues!

Until then, I’m on my laptop, the strongest machine I’ve got right now. It’s been interesting being back to a small screen. When I returned to college after hiatus, I was exclusively on a laptop for all of undergrad and grad school. I recall it worked very well to have a portable device that I could carry with me and had everything on it. Nowadays, not so much. The screen is really small, and I haven’t gotten an update to my prescription eyeglasses in a long time, too long, really. But, it is what it is! It’s a sweet little machine, and it actually works, so there’s that! Just, it’s a little harder to get things done.

I’ve been making progress on the Reading Room. It’s getting there, for some value of there that is where it is now? Yeah. Something I haven’t really talked about is that the Reading Room has been entirely boxed up in storage boxes for the entire time I was up on the mountain. I just didn’t know how long I’d be there, and so it never made sense to unpack all the books. So, I’ve gotten some uppacking done in the Reading Room, as I’ve been settling in. It’s been a treat to be able to put a few books on shelves and all those library-like things one gets to do with real, physical books as part of a balanced media diet. I guess it is fair to say that Hermetic Library is not just Everywhere and Nowhere, but is actually, also, finally, again, Somewhere.

In addition to continued work on getting ready for launching a crowdfunding effort for the idea to create some Hermetic Library Vade Mecum devices, I should shortly be getting a package from Hermetic Library Anthology Artist Mustafa al-Laylah with Postal Exchange and Publication Subscription perks that will be going out at the beginning of September for everyone that’s currently, as of right now, an ongoing Patron at those levels over on Patreon. If you want in on the next Postal Exchange or Publication Subscription mailing, head over and help make the magick happen!

Don’t forget that I announced the call for submissions to Hermetic Library’s anthology album for 2018, Magick, Music and Ritual 14! The first submission has arrived, so it has begun!
