As a bonus download, included with Magick, Music and Ritual 15, is the video Supernatural. All footage filmed and edited by Vivian Giourousis. Supernatural is a track, used in this video with permission, by Kristeen Young, performed by Waterworks.

And the day was on celestial celluloid;
and the night was a life I’ve tried to avoid
He moved in a mystic sphere,
and I needed to join him there.
He seemed ephemeral; if I’d hang-on,
he’d turn to air somehow.

Oh, the commonplace
is a mortal waste of space.
I’ll levitate. I’ll levitate from here.

Running, running – oh running, running – oh –
running, running, running from common.

I would have given all I am.
I would have taken just my share.
It would have been supernatural,
but you pushed me down on earthly ground,
while I was hoping you’d hear
something you’d like,
as I was singing like Scherharazade.

All my life I have to prove that I’m alive.
Shun the life that would seem as if I’d died.
He was on his throne
shooting lightening bolts at Rome.
He’s just flesh and bone,
a frightened gnome behind a megaphone.

Oh, the common man I will never understand.
I need more. I’ll have more, more, more.

Running, running – oh running, running – oh –
running, running, running, from common.

I would have given all I am.
I would have taken just my share.
It would have been supernatural,
but you pushed me down on earthly ground,
while I was hoping you’d hear
something you’d like,
as I was singing like Scherharazade.

Hermetic Library Artist Vivian Giourousis

Vivian Giourousis has explored the medium of analog film in its many formats using a wide variety of pre-digital technologies. She has also worked with some of the very first digital video equipment during its earliest accessibility. She adapted to the fast changes in the field of photography and video for the past 30 years, both as a commercial artist as well as an experimental filmmaker. Most recently, she simply creates using her iPhone because she enjoys the immediacy and the intimate, personal aspect, of working alone. Her approach is a combination of strict visual tradition and innovative experiment. Her work has screened in art galleries, museums, and film festivals around the world but what difference does that make?

DUCHAMP SPINNING GLASS from Francesca Fini on Vimeo.

video by Francesca Fini
music "Duchamp" by Isuzu Kochiwa

> Francesca Fini videoartista, performer e filmmaker romana.
> Isuzu Kochiwa vive a Osaka ed è il leader del gruppo post noise giapponese "Amok". Isuzu usa il suo computer, la sua voce e differenti elementi acustici per creare microsuoni, pesaggi acustici stratificati verso la totale psichedelia.

A sample of an Italian tv news program has been captured and digitized, stretched vertically to crush the image and then spun wildly on itself, turning into a beam of light. So the Italian tv distorted registration of the real world becomes a feverish plot made of pure color, as in Duchamp's rotating glass disks in which the outside world disintegrates. On this piece of digitally manipulated video was then superimposed a sample of an hollywood motion picture film, treated the same way, but along the horizontal axis, creating plots whose symbolic value is not to be known, because what the two videos illustrated and documented dissolved in the digital manipulation.
This video is part of a project that aims to remix and reinterpret the historical and contemporary imagery dealing with reality.

American Flags (2011) from Zoë Heyn-Jones on Vimeo.

Inspired by the diary/notebook films of Jonas Mekas and Marie Menken, American Flags (Dir. Zoë Heyn-Jones) casts a glance at the flag-saturated landscape of America seen through Canadian eyes. Between foreign and domestic, the extraordinary and the banal, American Flags invokes ideas of autoethnography, experimental geography, home movies, nostalgia, naïveté, and the legacy/genealogy of experimental film in New York City. Informed by Tzvetan Todorov’s The Conquest of America, the strange notion of claiming land by planting a flag is considered through social positionality and art practice informed by Indigenous land rights and solidarity.
